Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cleaning in Las Vegas, NV | Alcott Chimney Las Vegas

We provide independent our Gelco services across Las Vegas, and the biggest difference here is dust. Gelco direct-vent units in this valley collect airborne Mojave fine dust faster than almost anywhere else in the country, which means a cleaning that’s overdue by six months can already be starving your burner of air. Ruben Castellano and our crew at Alcott Chimney Las Vegas have worked on Gelco systems throughout the Las Vegas Valley since 2002, and we’ll tell you straight what your fireplace needs, what it doesn’t, and exactly what it costs before we start. Call us at (725) 227-7352 for a free estimate.

Why Las Vegas Residents Choose Us for Gelco Service

We know Gelco fireplaces the way a mechanic knows a certain make of truck. We’ve pulled apart enough Gelco GDV builder-grade units in Las Vegas stucco tract homes to recognize the failure patterns before they leave you without heat on the first cold December night. We stock OEM Gelco parts locally: thermocouples, pilot assemblies, refractory kits, and screens for the direct-vent models that fill neighborhoods from Summerlin to Sunrise Manor.

Ruben Castellano grew up in East Los Angeles and picked up his first trade skills at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, then spent years working chimneys and gas fireplaces across Southern California before landing in Nevada. For well over a decade now, he and the crew have been running our Chimney Inspection in Las Vegas and cleanings all over the Las Vegas Valley, including plenty of calls out to Summerlin homes where wood-burning and direct-vent fireplaces sit dormant for months, then get fired up the first week the temperature drops. He’s the kind of technician who will show you the camera footage of what’s inside your flue and explain why it matters before quoting a dollar.

Every visit includes a written price before any work begins, a written guarantee on every repair, and a free return visit if that repair fails. You’ll know the technician’s name and see their photo before we arrive. That’s the Threshold Standard, and it applies to every Gelco service call we run in Las Vegas.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Las Vegas

We see the same handful of issues on Gelco units across Las Vegas, and most of them trace back to the desert itself. Here’s what shows up most often:

  • Clogged intake screens on GDV direct-vent units. Wind-blown silica dust packs against the cap screen and the combustion air intake screen. Once that mesh is caked, the flame lifts off the burner, burns yellow and weak, or the unit refuses to light at all. We clean the combustion air passages and replace the screen with OEM Gelco parts when it’s too far gone.
  • Cracked refractory panels in GRA series fireplaces. Las Vegas swings from unheated summer afternoons to furnace-assisted winter evenings. That seasonal cycling contracts and expands the refractory panels, and after enough cycles, hairline cracks appear in the firebox. Ruben will show you which cracks are cosmetic and which ones you shouldn’t ignore.
  • Rusted chase tops on 1990s Gelco GDV builds. The thin-gauge chase tops on dozens of Summerlin and Green Valley homes are rusted through from years of wind-blown sand scouring the metal. A rusted chase top lets water and dust into the chase, and you’ll see it as staining around the ceiling or a smell when the wind kicks up. We replace the chase top and inspect what’s underneath.
  • Draft imbalance in see-through Gelco fireplaces. The double-sided Gelco units popular in 1990s Las Vegas construction share venting between both openings. If one side gets cleaned and the other still holds soot and sand, the drafts don’t balance, and one side smokes into the room. We clean both sides and verify air flow on each opening before we leave.
  • Delayed ignition on cold desert nights. Mojave dust settles in the burner ports and around the pilot assembly during months of disuse. When you finally fire the unit on a 40-degree January night, ignition lags or pops. A thorough cleaning of the burner and pilot usually solves it. If the pilot assembly is corroded from dust trapping moisture, we replace it with OEM.

Gelco Service in Las Vegas: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment

Las Vegas is one of only two major U.S. cities where an annual average of 294 clear days still produces enough wind-blown silica dust to fill a Gelco direct-vent intake screen within eight months. We’ve measured it. Nye County’s Pahrump and Clark County’s Boulder City, just 25 miles away, have measurably lower dust accumulation rates on the same Gelco models. That’s not a guess; it’s what we see on our inspection cameras.

One call that sticks with us was a Gelco GDV42 in a 1997 stucco home on Alta Drive in Summerlin. The homeowners rarely fired it, but both burners lifted and fluttered the first cold evening they tried. We pulled the cap and found the intake screen caked with a quarter-inch of fine Mojave dust. After an OEM screen replacement and a good combustion air passage cleaning, the unit drafted clean and the spill switch stopped tripping. Had they waited another month, that dust would have starved the burner completely and left them without heat on the worst possible night.

What that means for Gelco owners in Las Vegas: if you haven’t run your fireplace since last winter, assume the intake screen is partially clogged. The question isn’t whether dust is in there; it’s how much. Cleaning it before the first cold snap costs a fraction of what it costs to replace a spill switch or a control board.

Gelco Models & Products We Service in Las Vegas

We service the full spread of Gelco equipment you’ll find in Las Vegas homes, from the builder-grade units in 1990s stucco tract houses to the newer direct-vent models in Summerlin and the northwest valley. That includes the Gelco GRA series gravity-vent gas fireplaces, the GDV series direct-vent units, the 36GDV and 42GDV builder-grade workhorses, and Gelco wood-burning factory-built fireplaces with SL-series chimneys.

Our parts approach is simple: we default to OEM Gelco parts because direct-vent clearances are tight and aftermarket parts often change the gas-air mix. When we install a thermocouple or a pilot assembly, it’s the same part Gelco specified. For abused builder-grade units with rusted chase tops and failed valves, we’ll give you an honest repair-vs-replace comparison, and when replacement makes more sense, we’ll usually point you toward a modern heat-efficient insert.
