Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Damper Repair: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide
Gelco damper repair in Las Vegas typically runs $285 – $520 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the cable assembly, the damper plate itself, or the full frame. Most calls come in the same way: the damper won’t stay open, won’t seal shut, or the handle spins without catching anything. You’ve got a Gelco top-sealing damper up there, and one of its three wear points has finally given out, usually after a decade of Nevada temperature swings.
Here’s what we see on nearly every Gelco repair in Las Vegas: the silicone gasket around the damper plate hardens in our dry heat, cracks form, and suddenly your chimney becomes a two-way street for outside air. Or the stainless cable that runs from the handle down to the plate frays and snaps. Either way, you’re feeling a draft in summer, smelling smoke in winter, and your energy bill is quietly climbing. We stock the repair parts on our trucks because we know this call before you even finish describing it.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes two damper lines we service regularly: the standard top-sealing damper (round or oval plate, cable-operated) and the Gelco Energy-Saver series with the cast aluminum frame. The compatibility gotcha no one tells you about: the cable length is not universal. A damper mounted 12 inches down from the flue tile takes a different cable than one mounted 18 inches down. We measure the mounting depth before ordering anything, because guessing means a return trip and a handle that still binds.
If you can find the label on the frame or the plate, that’s gold. But after 10 or 15 summers in an attic-adjacent flue, labels fade to nothing. So we measure the flue opening (inside dimensions, not the masonry opening) and match the plate to within a quarter inch. For Gelco specifically, we prefer OEM repair components over generic aftermarket kits. The OEM gasket compound is formulated for the temperature range a Las Vegas flue actually sees, meaning a surface that hits 140 degrees in July and 300 degrees during a fire. Generic kits don’t always hold up to that swing. The aftermarket cable we sometimes use is a coated stainless from a professional supplier, but the plate and gasket stay Gelco.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle spins but nothing moves. The cable has either snapped at the plate connection or pulled out of the set screw. Inside the firebox, this feels like the handle’s just freewheeling. The fix is a new cable assembly, not a whole damper.
- Cold air pours down the flue in summer. Nevada’s temperature spread is hard on silicone. The gasket loses its flex, cracks along the seal line, and conditioned air escapes up the flue. Owners often describe this as “the fireplace feels like an open window.”
- Smoke rolls back into the room on startup. The plate isn’t fully sealing or has warped from repeated heat exposure. It’s common and repairable, but the smoke tells you the damper isn’t opening fully either, usually a cable tension issue.
- You hear a metallic rattle on windy days. That’s the plate chattering against the frame. It means the gasket is gone and the plate is contacting metal directly. Left alone, this wears the plate edge and you’re replacing more than the gasket.
- The handle is stiff or hard to pull. For Gelco models, stiffness usually means the cable has kinked inside the conduit or the spring at the plate has corroded. This is a 20-minute swap on the cable, and we’d rather do it before the handle assembly cracks from the extra force.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Las Vegas, a Gelco cable and lever assembly replacement runs $285 – $360 installed. A full plate-and-gasket replacement runs $390 – $520, frame included. The range depends on mounting depth (longer cable, more disassembly) and whether your plate is round or oval. Every quote includes the part, labor, removal of the old component, a camera check of the flue while we’re up there, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise: a written guarantee on the repair, and if it fails within a year, the second visit is free.
We hand you a written price before any work starts, and that price is the price. No “while we’re in there” add-ons. Ruben Castellano and the crew have been doing Gelco repairs across the Las Vegas Valley for over a decade, and we’d rather lose a sale than surprise someone at the end of the job.
DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner can safely check the handle action, look up the flue with a flashlight, and read the label if it’s still legible. That’s where the safe do-it-yourself part ends. Working on a top-sealing damper means standing on a ladder, reaching into the flue, and working with a spring-loaded mechanism over your head. If the cable snaps while the plate is under tension, that plate can drop and take a finger with it. Even pro chimney techs respect that spring.
We’re not going to tell you this is a mystical job only wizards can do, but it’s genuinely one of the highest-risk repairs on a fireplace, and the cost of a wrong-sized part alone makes the phone call worth it. If you’re anywhere in the Las Vegas area, call (725) 227-7352 and we’ll be out to look. Tell me what you’re seeing, and I’ll tell you straight what it means.
FAQs
A well-installed Gelco top-sealing damper in Las Vegas lasts 10 to 15 years before the gasket needs replacing, and the cable assembly usually needs one replacement in that same window. The dry heat accelerates silicone aging compared to coastal climates, which is why we check the gasket every annual sweep.
Yes, and in most cases only one component has failed, so we repair the cable or the gasket while the plate and frame stay. Full replacement is only needed when the frame has heat-warped or the plate edge has worn down to the metal, which happens less than 20% of the time.
Most Gelco damper repairs take between 45 minutes and two hours on site. The cable and lever swap is fastest; a full plate-and-gasket replacement takes longer because we clean the mounting surface and test-seal the new gasket before we leave.
We stock the common cable lengths, levers, gasket compounds, and plate sizes on our trucks, and we also stock parts for DuraFlex and HeatShield systems for related chimney repairs. If your exact plate size isn’t on the truck, we order it direct and schedule the install within the week.
