Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Crown Repair: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide
If your Gelco chimney crown is cracked, spalling, or letting water bleed into your chimney chase, a proper crown repair in Las Vegas typically runs $350 – $900 installed, depending on the damage and whether we’re resurfacing the existing crown or recasting sections of it. We keep Gelco-compatible crown materials on our service trucks, so most Las Vegas jobs are done in a single visit. Homeowners usually find the problem after a hard rain or a windy stretch when they notice water staining on the ceiling near the chimney, or little bits of what looks like concrete on the roof or in the gutters.
The crown is the sloped concrete or mortar cap that sits at the very top of your chimney, and Gelco makes a specific family of crown coats and sealants that perform differently in our desert climate than they do anywhere else. The repeated heat cycling we get in Las Vegas – 110-degree days followed by 60-degree nights – is exactly the kind of stress that hairline cracks a crown and lets water in. Once water gets under the surface, it freezes in colder months (yes, Las Vegas does freeze a few nights a year), and the expansion peels the crown apart from the inside.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
If your crown was finished with Gelco CrownCoat, Gelco FlexSeal, or one of Gelco’s crown repair kits, this guide applies to you. Gelco crown products are sold as resurfacing systems, not as a one-size-fits-all part, which means the right repair depends on what’s already underneath. The key identification point is the product label on the original container – if you have it – or the texture of the crown itself. Gelco’s crown systems cure to a slightly rubberized, matte finish that feels different from plain mortar. If you’re not sure, we can usually tell within 60 seconds of being on the roof.
The honest trade answer on OEM versus aftermarket: for crown repair, the “OEM” is really just the specific Gelco system the original installer chose. There are quality aftermarket crown coats – we also stock DuraFlex and HeatShield products – that outperform box-store concrete patch in every way. But the Gelco system is what we match when the homeowner wants it refinished with the exact same product family. One compatibility gotcha we see in Las Vegas: some 1990s-era chases built with Gelco crown products have a specific expansion-joint bead that modern aftermarket sealants don’t bond to properly. The crown looks fine from the ground, but water has been sneaking through the joint for years. We check for that specifically on every Gelco crown call in the Valley.

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing
- Hairline cracks in the crown surface that look like a spider web. In Las Vegas this is usually caused by thermal cycling – the crown expands in the summer heat and contracts at night. Gelco systems are flexible, but once the substrate underneath fails, the top coat cracks along with it.
- Flaking or “spalling” – small chunks of the crown showing up in the rain gutter or on the patio. This means water has gotten into the crown and freeze-thaw is doing the rest. Even in the Mojave, the nights below 32 degrees are enough to break apart a compromised crown.
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall next to the chimney chase, especially after a hard rain. This is the symptom that gets the call made. It means the crown (or the flashing, which we always check at the same time) has failed. In Las Vegas, our hard desert rains are brief but intense – and a breached crown lets every one of those gallons into the chase.
- Efflorescence – white, chalky deposits running down the brick or stone below the crown. That’s salt and mineral residue left behind when water evaporates off the masonry surface. It means the crown is passing water through, and has been for a while.
- A visible gap where the crown meets the flue tile or the chase walls. Gelco crown systems depend on a continuous bond at those joints. Once that bond breaks, the system is compromised even if the rest of the crown looks intact. We find this on roughly a third of Las Vegas homes we inspect with crowns that are 15 years or older.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For most Las Vegas homes, a Gelco-compatible crown repair runs $350 – $900 installed. The spread is driven by access – single-story versus two-story roof, how steep the roof pitch is – and by the condition of the substrate. If the existing crown can be cleaned, primed, and recoated with a Gelco resurfacing system, you’re at the lower end. If sections have to be recast because the concrete underneath has crumbled, you’re at the higher end.
Every crown repair from us includes the same written price before any work begins, so you’ll know the exact number before we touch the chimney. Parts and labor aren’t separated on the invoice – it’s one number for the whole job, done correctly – and every repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the crown fails within the first year, the second visit is free. We also run a water test after every crown repair, so we don’t leave the roof until we’ve verified the seal actually works.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check a few things from the ground safely: look for staining on the ceiling near the chimney, take a set of binoculars and study the crown for cracks, and check the gutters near the downspout for bits of mortar or crown material. What you shouldn’t do is get on the roof with a bucket of crown coat from the hardware store. Crown repair looks like painting and it isn’t. The prep work – removing the failed material, treating the substrate, and getting the surface profile right – is most of the job, and if it’s done wrong, the new coat fails within a year. There’s also the reality that most Las Vegas roofs are tile or steep pitch, and the chimney crown is at the highest, least forgiving point. That’s a genuinely dangerous place to be without proper equipment and fall protection.
If you’ve got a Gelco crown showing its age, give us a call at (725) 227-7352. We’ll get Ruben or one of the crew on the roof, take photos of what we find, and give you a written price before anything gets repaired. You’ll know the technician’s name and see their photo before we arrive.
FAQs
A properly prepped and applied Gelco-compatible crown repair lasts 10 – 20 years in Las Vegas, with the shorter end of that range for two-story homes on exposed ridgelines where UV and wind loading are constant. The biggest variable is substrate prep – if the old failing material isn’t fully removed, the new system can fail in as little as one season. Call (725) 227-7352 and we’ll tell you the realistic lifespan for your specific chimney after we’ve seen it.
Yes, and that’s actually the standard Gelco approach – their crown systems are designed for resurfacing and repair, not full tear-out and recast. We can repair most damaged Gelco crowns as long as the structural concrete underneath is still sound. If sections need recasting, we do that too, and the total price is still typically under $900. Call (725) 227-7352 for a written estimate.
Most Gelco crown repairs in Las Vegas are completed in one visit, usually two to three hours including prep, application, and water testing. The cure time for Gelco systems stretches over a day or two, but we can leave the roof once the product has set enough to survive a hard desert rain. Call (725) 227-7352 and we’ll schedule a time that works before burning season starts.
Yes, we keep Gelco-compatible crown coat, sealants, and repair systems on our service vehicles, along with DuraFlex and HeatShield alternatives, so most crown repairs in Las Vegas are done the same day we arrive. If your specific Gelco system requires a different product, we’ll tell you that in writing before you pay for anything. Call (725) 227-7352 to confirm we have what you need.
