Copperfield Damper Repair: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got a Copperfield damper that’s stuck, warped, or letting cold air pour down your chimney, we can get it repaired or replaced, usually within one visit. A typical Copperfield damper repair in Las Vegas runs $180 to $410 installed, depending on whether we’re rebuilding the existing assembly or installing a new damper plate and frame. Most homeowners find out their damper has failed on a windy evening when the living room suddenly smells like last winter’s fires, or on a July afternoon when they notice heat radiating from the fireplace like an open oven door.
We’re Alcott Chimney Las Vegas, and we’ve been fixing dampers across the Valley since 2002. We stock Copperfield-compatible damper components on our trucks, so we don’t have to play the “we’ll order it and come back in two weeks” game that other shops do. And yes, we’re an independent service provider, not a Copperfield dealer or affiliate. That means we’ll be honest with you about whether a genuine Copperfield part matters for your particular setup or whether a professional-grade equivalent will do the job just as well for less money.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield has made dampers for decades, and the good news is that most of their residential models share the same basic mounting footprint. If you have a cast-iron throat damper from Copperfield’s 4-series, 6-series, or the newer CF line, we almost certainly have compatible parts on the truck right now. The exceptions are the oddball sizes: some custom-width dampers made for zero-clearance fireplaces and a handful of oversized masonry openings that require a fabricated plate rather than a stock replacement.
Here’s what to check before you call. Look up inside the firebox with a flashlight. On the damper frame, you’ll usually find a small raised casting mark with a number, often starting with “CF” or “CP.” If you can’t find a number, measure the width of the opening from edge to edge in inches. Copperfield throat dampers generally come in 24, 30, 36, 42, and 48-inch widths, and if you tell us the measurement, we can usually tell you on the phone whether it’s a stock match. One Las Vegas-specific gotcha: homes built during the 1990s construction boom here often got builder-grade Copperfield units that were slightly undersized for the flue, which accelerates warping. We see it all the time in Summerlin North and Green Valley. When that’s the case, we’ll recommend stepping up to a properly sized replacement rather than swapping in the same undersized part that warped in the first place.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: genuine Copperfield cast-iron plates are heavier and tend to hold their shape longer, but for a standard throat damper, a professional-grade cast-iron equivalent from a brand like Famco performs just as well and typically saves you $40 to $80. If you have a top-sealing damper from Copperfield’s TL series, we strongly recommend staying with genuine parts. Those have tighter tolerances and specific gasket materials that aftermarket alternatives don’t always match.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle spins freely with no resistance. That usually means the pivot pin or the linkage between the handle and the damper plate has sheared or slipped. When we open it up, it’s often a 15-minute fix with a replacement pin, but if the plate itself has separated from the frame, it’s a bigger job.
- The damper won’t close all the way. If there’s a visible gap even when you crank the handle as far as it’ll go, the plate is warped or the frame has shifted. In Las Vegas, the dry air actually works in your favor here; less moisture means less rust. But repeated heat cycling from decades of fires still takes its toll on thin cast iron.
- Downdrafts when the fireplace isn’t in use. This is often blamed on the wind, and sometimes it is. But a damper that doesn’t seat flush will let gusts push air down the flue and into the house. We get these calls most often in the winter months when the wind kicks up through the Valley’s natural corridors.
- Visible rust or pitting on the damper plate. A little surface rust is normal. Deep pitting or flaking metal means the plate is nearing the end of its life. Replacing just the plate is possible on most Copperfield models, and it’s cheaper than you’d think.
- You can see daylight through the flue even when the damper is closed. That’s the most obvious one, and it usually means the damper has warped enough that sealing is no longer possible. A new plate and frame assembly is the fix. You’ll also want to have us check the flue while we’re in there, because a damper that’s been letting the desert heat pour up the chimney for years can leave deposits that need sweeping.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
A straightforward Copperfield damper plate replacement in Las Vegas typically runs $180 to $260, including the part and labor. If the frame is warped or the mounting hardware has failed, you’re looking at a full damper assembly swap, which runs $300 to $410 installed. The price includes our written estimate before any work starts, the part itself, removal of the old components, installation, and a function test when we’re done.
What drives the range? Whether the damper is a standard stock size or a custom width, whether you want genuine Copperfield or a professional equivalent, and whether the old frame can be reused. We’ll show you the old part when we take it out and walk you through exactly what failed before we install anything new. Every repair comes with our written guarantee. If the damper fails within 365 days, the second visit and the repair work are free. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s included on every job, not offered as an add-on.

Here’s my honest take, and I’ll put Ruben Castellano’s name on it. You can safely diagnose a failing damper from your living room floor with a flashlight. Look for gaps, rust, and whether the handle moves the plate. What you should not do is try to remove a cast-iron damper plate yourself, especially on an older installation. Those plates are heavy, the mounting hardware is often corroded, and if a plate drops while you’re working under it inside the firebox, that’s a serious injury. There’s also a real risk of cracking the surrounding masonry if you force a seized assembly.
We’ve also seen homeowners “fix” a drafty damper by jamming insulation or even spray foam up the flue. Please don’t do that. Blocking a flue that isn’t properly capped creates a moisture trap and a fire hazard. If your damper is failing, call us at (725) 227-7352 and we’ll give you a straight answer and a written price. Tell me what you’re seeing, and I’ll tell you straight what it means.
FAQs
A well-maintained cast-iron Copperfield damper in Las Vegas typically lasts 15 to 25 years. The dry desert air means less rust than you’d see in coastal climates, but repeated heat cycling eventually warps the plate. If your fireplace was built in the 1990s or early 2000s and you’ve never touched the damper, it’s probably near the end of its service life. Call (725) 227-7352 and we can inspect it during a standard chimney sweep appointment.
Yes, in about half the cases we see. A sheared pivot pin, a slipped linkage, or a misaligned handle can usually be repaired in under an hour without replacing the plate. If the cast iron itself is cracked or warped, repair won’t hold, and replacement is the honest answer. We’ll show you the damage and let you decide before any work begins.
Most standard Copperfield damper replacements take 60 to 90 minutes on site. If we need to fabricate a custom-width plate or rebuild the mounting frame, that can stretch to a few hours or require a brief follow-up visit. Either way, we’ll give you a time window and a written price before we start.
Yes. Our trucks carry Copperfield-compatible plates, pivot pins, handles, and complete frame assemblies for the most common residential sizes. We also carry professional components from DuraFlex, HeatShield, Gelco, and Famco when a crossover part is the better value. If your damper needs a custom size, we’ll place the order and get you scheduled as soon as it arrives.
