Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Famco chimney caps throughout Las Vegas, with typical installed pricing running $285 to $575 depending on cap size, flue configuration, and roof access. Most Famco cap replacements are done in a single visit since we carry the common sizes on our trucks. The way most homeowners discover their Famco cap has failed is the same every time: they’re up on the roof cleaning gutters, or they spot rust staining on the chimney chase from the backyard, or a bird gets into the house through the fireplace. By then the cap has usually been compromised for a full season or longer.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco makes three cap lines we regularly work with in Las Vegas: the SC series (single-flue, slip-in design), the MC series (multi-flue, mounts over the entire flue tile crown), and the CC series (chase covers with integrated caps for prefab chimneys). The gotcha most owners hit is measuring the flue tile’s outside dimensions for an SC cap versus the inside for an MC cap. Get that backwards and you’ll order a cap that either won’t seat or slides straight down the flue. When we show up, we measure both ways and confirm against the Famco stamping on the old cap skirt before we quote anything.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question for Famco specifically: the SC and MC series use 304 stainless steel mesh and a 24-gauge galvanized base, which is a spec worth knowing because cheap aftermarket equivalents often use 430 stainless or aluminum mesh that starts sagging within two Las Vegas summers. We stock genuine Famco caps plus a handful of American-made equivalents that match or beat the 304 spec. We’ll tell you which one we’re quoting and why.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaking down the chimney chase or flue tile. This means the cap’s galvanized base has lost its zinc layer and the steel underneath is oxidizing. In Las Vegas this happens faster than you’d think, not from rain but from our summer heat cycling plus the occasional monsoon-season downpour hitting a hot metal surface.
- The cap is sitting crooked or shifted off-center. Wind is the usual culprit. The slip-in style SC caps depend on friction fit, and years of thermal expansion and contraction can loosen that fit until a strong gust walks the cap partway off the flue.
- Birds, bats, or rodents inside the fireplace. The mesh screen has a hole in it, or the cap lifted enough to create a gap. We see this most often on caps installed before 2015, where the original screen was a lighter gauge wire and has finally corroded through.
- Water in the firebox after a heavy rain. The cap’s lid has warped or the screen is so clogged with creosote and desert dust that rain no longer sheds properly. Water gets in through the flue opening and makes its way down.
- Visible gaps between the cap base and the flue tile. The original installer either measured wrong or used a universal-fit cap that was never the right size. The gap lets rain and embers through, which defeats the entire purpose.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single-flue Famco SC cap in Las Vegas, you’re looking at $285 to $395 installed. Multi-flue MC caps run $425 to $575 because of the larger footprint and the added step of sealing the crown edge. If you have a prefab chimney that needs the full chase cover replaced, that’s typically $650 to $900 depending on chase dimensions and whether we’re custom-bending the cover on site.
Every quote includes the cap itself, removal of the old unit, flue tile inspection, proper seating and mechanical fastening where the application calls for it, and full cleanup of any debris left behind by the old cap. The written price Ruben Castellano’s crew gives you before any work starts is the price you pay, period. The cap replacement is covered by our written guarantee, and if the installation fails within 365 days, the second visit to make it right is free.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable on a ladder and your roof pitch is walkable, you can absolutely measure your flue and check whether your Famco cap is still seated properly. That’s useful information to have before you call. What we’d caution against is doing the actual cap swap yourself on a steep roof or a two-story Las Vegas home where the chimney chase sits high off the ground. The risk isn’t the cap; it’s the fall. We’ve also seen DIY installs where the homeowner used roofing cement to “seal” the cap base to the flue tile, which made the next replacement a miserable job for everyone involved.
If the cap is on a single-story home with a low-pitch roof and you’re handy, a slip-in SC cap is a reasonable weekend project. For anything taller, steeper, or multi-flue, call us at (725) 227-7352 and we’ll get it handled safely.
FAQs
Eight to twelve years is realistic for a Famco SC or MC cap in Las Vegas, with the mesh screen usually failing first. The intense UV exposure and summer heat cycling is harder on the screen wire than most homeowners expect. If your cap is past the eight-year mark and showing rust, replacement is the more honest call than patching.
For small rust spots or a loose fit, repair is sometimes possible. For rust that has eaten through the base or mesh holes larger than a quarter, replacement makes more financial sense. We’ll show you the damage before recommending anything. Call (725) 227-7352 and we’ll give you a straight answer.
Most single-flue cap replacements take 45 minutes to an hour from setup to cleanup. Multi-flue and chase cover jobs run two to three hours. We schedule a single visit for the work and confirm the technician’s name and photo before we arrive.
We keep the common SC and MC sizes stocked on our trucks, along with mesh, lid, and base components for on-site repairs. If you need a nonstandard size or a full custom chase cover, we order it and return to install once it arrives. Call (725) 227-7352 and tell us what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you straight what it means.
