Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide
DuraFlex crown repair in Las Vegas typically runs $385 to $740 installed, and in most cases we can complete the work the same week you call. That price includes the crown material, surface prep, and labor, with a written price in your hand before we touch anything. Most homeowners discover the crown has failed the same way: a water stain on the ceiling near the fireplace, or a call from their HVAC company after a routine check mentions “crown spalling” and no one explains what that means.
The crown is the concrete or mortar cap that sits on top of your chimney, sealing the gap where the flue tile pokes through. On DuraFlex-lined systems, the crown does the same job it ever did: it keeps water from working its way between the liner and the masonry. When it cracks, water gets in, and that water attacks the mortar joints, the damper, and eventually the firebox. Tell me what you’re seeing, and I’ll tell you straight what it means.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex crown systems come in two families: the standard DuraFlex DF series (316L stainless, round flue) and the DuraFlex Pro series, which uses a heavier gauge outer wall for masonry chimneys that have seen moisture damage before. Both use the same crown termination approach: a stainless top plate that mates to the flue opening, a mortar or castable crown bed, and a rain collar that seals the liner. The crown repair we’re talking about here is the bed itself, not the liner.
If you’re unsure which liner you have, look at the metal tag attached to the termination cap on the roof. DuraFlex stamps the model and diameter right on it, usually “DF” or “DF Pro” followed by a number like 6″ or 8″. No tag? We can confirm diameter from the ground with a measuring scope before we ever set up a ladder. One gotcha we see often in Las Vegas: some builders installed 5.5″ flue tiles and forced a 6″ DuraFlex liner through them, which works until the crown cracks and the liner shifts. If your crown needs rebuilding, that’s the moment to correct the fit, not patch around it.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision: DuraFlex crowns and termination hardware are worth using genuine parts for, because the rain collar and top plate have to seat against the crown bed exactly. Aftermarket crown material is fine for the mortar bed itself. We stock DuraFlex termination hardware and use professional-grade crown mortar from suppliers serving the Vegas trade, not box-store patch mix.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on the ceiling or wall near the chimney. This is the classic first sign. The crown cracks, monsoon rain or a hard wind-driven storm forces water under the crown bed, and it migrates down the chase or through the masonry. By the time you see the stain, the crack has been open for months. Cause: crown bed shrinkage or freeze-thaw cycling, even in a desert climate, because nighttime winter temps in Vegas do drop below freezing.
- Efflorescence on the brick or stone above the roofline. That white, chalky film is salt being pushed out of the masonry as water moves through it. It’s not a structural emergency by itself, but it means water is already inside the chimney chase. Cause: crown micro-cracks too small to see with the naked eye, but big enough to pass water.
- The rain collar around the flue has lifted or rotated. Wind whipping across a Las Vegas valley roofline will work a loose collar back and forth until the seal fails. We see this most in Summerlin and the northwest, where homes sit higher and get more wind. Cause: failed caulk joint at the collar-to-crown interface, accelerated by UV breakdown of the sealant.
- A rust spot on the top plate or liner. That’s moisture pooling where the liner meets the crown, usually from a crown that slopes inward instead of away. Cause: poor original crown pitch; many Vegas production homes got flat crowns because they were faster to pour.
- You hear a metallic ticking after a fire. As the liner heats and cools, it expands and contracts inside the chimney. A cracked crown means the liner can move more than it should, and that sounds like clicking or ticking from the firebox after the fire dies down. Cause: liner movement against a crown bed that’s no longer holding it in place.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Las Vegas, a DuraFlex crown repair runs $385 to $740 depending on crown size, access difficulty, and whether we’re rebuilding the crown bed from scratch or repairing cracking with a bonded overlay. Most standard single-flue residential work lands between $425 and $560. That’s turnkey: material, labor, disposal, and the written guarantee.
We hand you a written price before any work starts, and that price doesn’t change unless we uncover something structural you need to see for yourself. If the crown is so far gone that we’re removing and recasting it, we’ll show you the cracked pieces before they go in the truck. Every crown repair from Alcott Chimney Las Vegas carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, the second visit is free. No fine print about “normal wear.” One year, written down.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect the crown from a ladder, if you’re comfortable on one and the chimney is a single story. Look for visible cracking, spalled mortar on the roof around the chimney, or a rain collar that’s lifted. You can also pour a small amount of water on the crown and watch where it goes: if it pools instead of shedding, the pitch is wrong.
Beyond that, crown repair is not a weekend job. Working on a roof edge while troweling crown material is how people fall. You’re mixing and placing mortar at height, often around a hot flue, and if the liner needs to be reseated in the process, you need the right tools and two people. And here’s the thing: if a DIY crown repair fails, the water damage it causes down the road is not what your homeowner’s policy wants to hear about. Call (725) 227-7352 and we’ll give you a straight quote. If the crown can wait, we’ll tell you it can wait. If it can’t, you’ll know why, with pictures to back it up.
FAQs
A properly rebuilt DuraFlex crown in Las Vegas lasts 15 to 25 years, with the lower end of that range on chimneys that get the worst of the summer sun on the west or south face. The UV exposure here breaks down crown sealant faster than in most markets, so we re-seal the collar as part of every crown repair we do.
In many cases, yes. Hairline cracks under 1/8 inch wide can be sealed and overlaid with a bonded crown repair material that buys you years of service. But if the crown is actively spalling, deteriorating at the edges, or the liner is shifting in the bed, a patch will fail within two seasons, and you’ll pay twice. Call (725) 227-7352 and we’ll give you an honest read on which one yours needs.
Most single-flue DuraFlex crown repairs take half a day on site, including setup, teardown, and cleanup. If the crown needs full recasting, we’ll typically be done by early afternoon. We do the work from the roof; we don’t need to come inside your home unless you’d like us to inspect the firebox while we’re there.
We stock DuraFlex top plates, rain collars, and termination caps for 6″ and 8″ liners on the truck, along with professional-grade crown mortar. For less common sizes or the DuraFlex Pro line, we order directly from suppliers we’ve been buying from since Ruben Castellano started running chimney work here in the valley. Most specialty parts arrive in two to three business days.
